“What every paediatrician needs to know about mental health”

10am: Arrival and coffee
10.30 am Casting our net wide- the breadth and depth of mental health in paediatrics
Objective: to deepen the appreciation of delegates into the breadth of mental health issues that are encountered in paediatric practice.
Audience: multi-professional including paediatricians, psychologist and psychiatrists of all grades.
10.30 Dr Alan Cooklin, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, on the needs of children of parents with mental illness
12.30 Lunch
1.30 Dr Joanne Young, Associate specialist in paediatrics and family therapist, at Borders General Hospital on using psychotherapeutic concepts in Paediatrics
2.30 Dr Samantha Johnson, Clinical Psychologist for the Epicure study on the psychology of prematurity
Members’ session (open-ended discussion structured around member’s concerns/ questions)
5pm: Elena Garralda, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCL, will speak on mental health in paediatric outpatients
7.30pm The Annual BPMHG Dinner in the Baronial Hall, Highgate House

Friday 27th: ‘Mental health for general paediatricians’ Joint between BAGP (British Association of General Paediatricians) and BPMHG
Day objectives: to provide a practical and accessible guide to general paediatricians encountering mental health problems in their everyday practice.
Audience: General paediatricians (consultants and senior trainees)
9am: BPMHG Annual General Meeting.
10am: Danya Glaser, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at GOSH, on early identification and management of suspected FII
11am-1230pm: Seminar: “Making time for mental health in Paediatric OPD”.
Content to include screaming babies, functional pain, CBT, and much more!

- Dr Anthony Crabb Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist atSouthampton, on handling the difficult child on a paediatric ward.
- Dr Lee Hudson, Clinical Fellow at GOSH on “What paediatricians should know about eating disorders”
- Medikidz: the use of comics to communicate health information to children and YP
