The meaning of illness- conference in November

The Meaning of Illness: psychological and social aspects of illness in children and young people

Physical illness and physical symptoms are common in children and young people. Up to 15% have long term physical conditions and approximately 10% experience physical symptoms which cannot be accounted for by physical illness. However there is significant overlap, many children with long term conditions experience symptoms (pain, tiredness etc) which cannot be fully explained by their condition.

Psychological and social understanding of the meaning of illness and physical symptoms is central to providing effective interventions for children and young people. The Meaning of Illness, is a collaboration between the Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health and the European Association of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatics. The international conference committee have brought together a distinguished group of clinicians and academics to explore: the meaning of illness, psychological and social aspects of long term conditions, medically unexplained symptoms and factititous induced illness. The headline plenary presentations on childhood long term conditions and medically unexplained symptoms will be followed by workshop presentations. We would encourage early registration for this important conference and seek expressions of interest from clinicians and researchers who are interested in presenting workshops.

Multidisciplinary conversations in child health: JFN

December 7th, 2010

Please consider signing up to the joining forces network

This is a leaderless email group designed to exchange practice experience – including helping one another with clinical predicaments  –  introduce projects and research, debate policy and theoretical differences and inform others about, or propose, conferences that would be of interest to the membership.

JFN exists to promote collaborative work in child health, to ensure that mental health, psychological, educational, therapeutic, social and all other services are properly understood by each other and by paediatric medical and nursing colleagues and commissioners (all of whom may also be members of the group) and the public. From the point of view of children, adolescents and their families the differences between disciplines are less important than getting the right help when in paediatric care. Joining forces is not intended to be a substitute for any single discipline group you may already belong to. These are vital and necessary for professional development and identity. This is a ‘united nations’ or ‘meta’ group.

To sign up simply email Max Davie maxdavie@gmail.com Carol Hanson mbzz35@ukgateway.net Jacqui Stedmon j.stedmon@plymouth.ac.uk or Sebastian Kraemer kraemer@doctors.org.uk and you will get an invitation very soon.

Squiggle foundation lecture

August 3rd, 2010

We’ve had a flyer for a Squiggle foundation lecture, to be held on 16th October in North London.

Titled “There’s no such thing as a Fetus”, it’s likely to be fairly provocative. In a good way

The British Paediatric Mental Health Group is a group of professionals interested in developing and promoting the role of paediatricians in mental health. Welcome to our website.
